Aligning Leadership with a new Corporate Strategy for Skanska

From modest beginnings in a small fishing village in southern Sweden more than 125 years ago, Skanska is now one of the world’s leading project development and construction companies, employing over 57,000 employees worldwide.

The Challenge

In 2015 Skanska AB and Skanska UK revised their Corporate Strategy that had steered them through the austerity years 2010-2015.

With a new Corporate Strategy due to be launched late 2015 the suite of leadership development offerings needed revising to ensure that they were up to date, fit for purpose and would develop Skanska’s leadership talent for the next 5 years and beyond.


The Mission (brief)

  • Undertake a review and re-design of Skanska UK’s suite of leadership development programmes
  • To support Skanska’s new strategic priority of ‘profit with purpose’

The Solution

Navigator worked closely with the in-house Leadership Development team over three months.

We reviewed all current offerings, participated in several programmes and interviewed suppliers and potential providers as well as reviewing literature for up to date thinking on leadership development.

Additionally, most members of Skanska’s Executive and Strategic Management teams (EMT & SMT) were interviewed to fully appreciate and understand the needs of the business.

  • The work culminated in a recommendation of 5 new programmes catering for the respective grades and experience of employees
  • Making best use of what worked well previously, along with new programmes that focussed on the new ‘Profit with Purpose’ approach by the company
  • Preparing leaders for the ambitions of the business in the years ahead
