Rachel Moonan

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service

Give us a brief description of your background

I am the Sustainability Officer at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. I have been in position since Autumn 2022. Prior to this, I completed my BA (Hons) in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Birmingham, before completing my MSc with distinction in Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Bristol. The highlight of my time at Bristol was my role as Climate Action Officer for the University of Bristol’s Sustainability Team.

Who/what inspires you?

I am inspired by my colleagues and the communities that we serve. The challenges that the fire service will face, as the frontline of the climate crisis, underlines the importance of our work in sustainability. The most vulnerable members of our community will bear the brunt of the effects of climate change, and it is our responsibility to mitigate these impacts.

I am also a huge advocate for spending time in nature and having an active lifestyle; this prompted my initial passion for the natural environment and inspired me to pursue a career in sustainability.

What does the word leadership make you think of?

Leadership makes me think of compassion. I think a good leader is someone who has empathy, prioritises equality and can communicate effectively.

How do you feel about taking part in the Future Leaders programme?

I feel extremely privileged to have been given the opportunity to take part in the Future Leaders Programme. I am looking forward to learning from like-minded people and gaining a greater understanding of how to be an advocate for sustainable development.

What do you think are the keys to a sustainable future?

I think the key to achieving a sustainable future is to embed sustainability in leadership in all organisations. Being ambitious and engaged will empower others to deliver change and act responsibly.
