Future Leaders: Cohort 4

Achieving Net Zero 50

Education is a large part of life, every day individuals will be educated, whether this be in school, work, or life. Education is vital in developing skills such as decision-making, thinking differently and making capacity.

Achieving Net Zero 50 is much like education, it is too a large part of life and, every day, individuals should be educated on Net Zero 50.

The FLP4 cohort wanted to support in driving the education of this matter and leading the changes needed to achieve Net Zero 50.

We can’t have a how without a why and we can’t a have why without a mission

The mission:

Future leaders supporting families and the next generation to be carbon aware and create a sustainable future.

The why:

Net Zero 50 cannot be achieved by legislation alone. We must ensure the engagement and willingness of people to adopt and drive change within their homes and communities.

The how:

By creating an easily accessible resource package for parents and carers to support them in educating the next generation.

Research highlighted the importance of video messaging to our demographic, and it was significant to support the next generation with an educative package on carbon literacy and making a change which resulted in our mission.

To achieve our mission, we researched the educational videos already available to children, taking note of the ages these videos would relate to. We also conducted a survey to find a correlation between our mission and how to adapt this to a target audience. We spotted an opportunity for children aged 8–10 and decided to focus our project on this age group.

Working closely with WeMake, we developed a storyboard and script for a children’s animation, creating an age-appropriate narrative that translates into engaging visuals, requiring understanding and simplifying complex ideas into digestible content and integrating dialogue that resonates with young viewers, including iterations and confirmation.

Net Zero by 2050 is going to need the support of the next generation. We are responsible for empowering them to achieve that goal.

The Future Leaders Programme empowered our cohort to achieve the mission inspired to us by using skills acquired through regular coaching sessions and collaborative discussions with fellow leaders from different backgrounds..
