Future Leaders: Cohort 1

Looking to the future

The FLP1 cohort wanted to design a product that leverages their role as future leaders.

The group wanted to consider the actions or plans a local authority has in place to reduce their community carbon footprint.

The higher the impact of these actions with a documented plan in place the higher the authority would score within the benchmarking scheme; and subsequently the higher they will rank within the UK. However, when a local authority has an area of improvement or does not have the necessary plans in place mentioned within the questions, the organisation will be provided with guidance on how this can be achieved and the steps they should take.

The aims of the project were:

1
Create a benchmarking framework to rank local authorities on their net zero actions

2
To promote and celebrate local leaders championing the net zero transition

3
To act as an enabler for sharing best practice

4
To hold those in power to account

Collaboration will be key in guaranteeing a low carbon future.

The project can improve how local authorities currently communicate with one another and this will improve best practice throughout different communities - for example how a local authority may be able to upskill their workforce into the green sector. The overall idea is to release a league table of the local authorities who are taking the necessary action to comply with the net zero goal. Sharing their achievements would be a huge advantage.

In the future, the project has the potential to heighten the way local authorities come to decisions regarding how they serve their community to ensure best practice in the fight to net zero.

There are several ways the project has begun to develop these ideas already such as targeting local authorities that are located close together to create a competition aspect to the benchmarking.

However, for this to have the overall affect desired it will need to become widely adopted by the majority of local authorities.

For this to be achieved a number of aspects are still required:

Marketing campaign

Government lobbying

Scheme ambassador
