MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)

Give us a brief description of your background

I joined MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) in 2019, my current role is within the Operations team as an Operations Analyst. MCS is a certification scheme, certifying products and installers so that customers can have confidence in the low-carbon technology they invest in. Domestic energy has a huge part to play in achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and we work closely with industry and government to achieve this.

Before joining MCS, I studied Biology at Newcastle University and graduated in 2017. I then completed a master’s in Marine Planning & Management at the University of Liverpool which was largely focused on management of environmental issues.

Growing up in the Lake District I have developed a range of hobbies such as hiking, running, cycling, and climbing. I also love skiing when I get the opportunity to go abroad!

Who/what inspires you?

I recently read ‘Why women will save the planet’ which has a collection of essays from inspiring women across the globe that have made a contribution to environmental sustainability. The essays demonstrate both the need for women’s empowerment for climate action, and the powerful change it can bring.

It has inspired me to try to reach an influential position in my career and make a real difference within the environmental sector.

What does the word leadership make you think of?

A leader can be in any role. As long as you recognise that there’s something that needs to be done, you can make a contribution towards doing what’s needed, and you do it and gather other people in support of that, that’s leadership.

How do you feel about taking part in the Future Leaders programme?

I feel very grateful for the opportunity to be involved in such a forward-thinking programme. I look forward to collaborating with a likeminded cohort and delivering a project to drive businesses towards net zero.

What do you think are the keys to a sustainable future?

A major shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy as our main energy source is critical for a sustainable future. Large corporations must lead the way by investing in clean technology such as renewable energy, and direct finance away from fossil fuel-burning industries.
