Olivia Smalley
Heat Pump Association
Give us a brief description of your background
I currently lead the Heat Pump Association’s policy and strategic communications efforts and have experience in public affairs and policy work. Prior to joining the HPA, I was Public Affairs Advisor to the NAPIT Group, focusing on policy related to electrical safety, competency, and standards.
I also have led policy initiatives for the Association for Consultancy and Engineering in the UK Devolved Nations, leading workstreams on decarbonising the built environment and transport. Additionally, I have a Master’s degree in Politics and Contemporary History from the University of Nottingham, providing me with a strong foundation for my role in shaping and communicating policy directions.
Who/what inspires you?
People who have a passion for what they do – I enjoy working with others who like to get into the details and aren’t afraid to be curious and question (no matter how geeky we may seem to others).
What does the word leadership make you think of?
Empowering others to thrive. It’s important to ensure as a leader you are accountable for your team’s actions and using each member’s strengths to achieve the best results and provide praise appropriately.
How do you feel about taking part in the Future Leaders programme?
I’m really looking forward to joining the programme and connecting with others in the net zero space. I’m hoping to learn concepts and tools I can implement into my working and personal life.
What do you think are the keys to a sustainable future?
Engagement and awareness but also honesty, affordability and ease. The transition to net zero or a sustainable future should mean nobody is left behind.
